Belgium’s FOD Economie issues warning on choosing eclipse glasses for the August 12 solar eclipse

Ahead of the upcoming August 12 solar eclipse, Belgium’s FOD Economie is reminding consumers of the risks of buying eclipse glasses: only glasses specifically designed for looking directly at the sun and compliant with EU regulations can effectively protect against irreversible eye damage. These products are personal protective equipment and must undergo conformity assessment by a notified body and bear the CE marking. The department advises checking for the CE marking, the manufacturer’s and importer’s contact details, and clear labeling stating that the glasses are for looking directly at the sun or viewing an eclipse. It warns that ordinary sunglasses, 3D cinema glasses, smoked glass, photographic film negatives, and similar items are not suitable for safely viewing an eclipse.

Belgium’s FOD Economie launches a dangerous product recall lookup platform

Belgium’s FOD Economie has launched an online platform that brings together warnings about recalled dangerous non-food products. Consumers can check in one click whether products in their homes have been recalled, learn about the risks, and find out how to obtain a refund. The platform initially covers categories including toys, electrical appliances, baby products, personal protective equipment, and gas appliances. Warnings include photos, brand, model, batch or serial number, and compensation details. Users can also subscribe to weekly recall emails. The initiative is based on the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988.
