A First-Time Shipper’s Guide to Hiring a Freight Forwarder in Canada: Scope of Responsibilities, Customs Accounts, and Cost Control

First-time shippers hire international freight forwarders to arrange bookings, prepare export and import documents, and coordinate pickup through delivery. However, the freight forwarder does not become the importer of record; the company remains responsible for its customs account, CBSA financial security, and duties. Canadian customs clearance must be handled through the CARM Client Portal. As of May 20, 2025, commercial importers must post their own financial security, and as of January 1, 2026, a broker’s Business Number can no longer be used for release.
