City Power to use AI to overhaul Johannesburg’s electricity billing system

Johannesburg’s municipal electricity utility, City Power, plans to use AI to tackle nearly 6 billion rand in technical and non-technical electricity losses each year, and has publicly invited external experts to help overhaul its revenue recovery system. The plan includes AI-powered electricity sales management, customer and meter audits, sales anomaly detection, and reconciliation. Third-party vendors will need to connect with at least two major banks, two retail groups, and cash electricity vending machines. Last year, City Power took over the billing process from the City of Johannesburg and set up a dedicated department to handle billing inquiries.
