Tesla’s Cybercab Debuts in Japan as NHTSA Opens Review of Its Road Legality

Tesla has brought its steering-wheel- and pedal-free Cybercab robotaxi to Japan for the first time, with public displays in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. The vehicle had just begun commercial passenger service in Austin on September 3. That same afternoon, NHTSA opened audit inquiry AQ26002 concerning approximately 1,000 Cybercabs, reviewing whether directly self-certifying them under existing FMVSS is lawful.
