As EU Rules Approach, KTU Researchers Propose a Tool to Assess Digital Building Models
Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) developed a prototype tool that checks whether building models in IFC format contain the data needed to assess life-cycle carbon footprints and circularity, and flags missing information. The study found that the digital models examined contained almost no information on component connections or disassembly, making it difficult to determine whether components could be removed and reused. The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires life-cycle carbon footprint calculations for new buildings with a floor area exceeding 1,000 square meters starting in 2028, with the requirement extending to all new buildings from 2030.
