Port of Los Angeles September container throughput tops one million TEUs, setting a monthly record
The Port of Los Angeles handled 1,042,652 TEUs in September, setting a monthly record. Loaded imports totaled 545,696 TEUs, up 19% year over year. Port Executive Director Eugene Seroka attributed the increase to lower tariffs than earlier this year, importers replenishing inventories, and cargo diversions driven by transit problems in the Suez and Panama Canals and rising ship fuel prices. He expects the share of cargo diverted from ports on the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts to exceed the previous estimate of 5%.
Canal transit disruptions and rising fuel prices are shifting cargo flows toward the Port of Los Angeles, where increased throughput is accompanied by cost pressures on small trucking companies and detours caused by bridge closures.
